What is Project Lifesaver

Project Lifesaver is a national, proactive electronic tracking program used to assist in locating people with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and related disorders, and children with Down Syndrome or Autism Spectrum Disorder who wander from home and become lost.

A lost child with Autism or Down Syndrome, or an adult wandering from Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, constitutes a critical emergency and presents challenges to local Law Enforcement in search and rescue operations. While we cannot predict when a person will become lost, we can prepare.

A personalized state-of-the-art battery powered transmitter is used that emits a constant radio signal 24 hours a day. The radio transmitter is the size of a wristwatch and provides a constant radio signal.

Once the 911 Dispatch Center is notified that a person is missing, Law Enforcement identify the signal from a specialized directional antenna and are able to track the wandering person.

Law Enforcement Officers and Partners will use this equipment on foot, in cars, and also by air, providing maximum cover and capability for search efforts for several miles.

Nationwide, Project Lifesaver has responded to more than 3,046 rescues and most with a recover time of 30 minutes or less.

*Please note that this system is NOT a GPS tracking system. This system uses a transmitter to locate a person after they have become lost.
